In 2009, Caron designed a replacement cap puller kit comprised of purpose-built pullers along with all the tools necessary to perform the cap replacement. In years past, Caron provided teams of technicians that would travel to a site and perform this cap replacement procedure. Although this program is still available, many customers today have the capability to do this project themselves.

Over the years most of our customers have asked CARON to supply technicians to remove and replace caps on our Pin‐On® wheels. Recent times have forced some customers to utilize their own personnel in an attempt to save money. Since 2003 most of our product has been our patented MEGAMAX Pin‐On® locking teeth which incorporates a mortise and tenon lock design on the cap to base assembly. These of course fit tightly together to enable us to guarantee field replacement of the caps reusing the original bases. Our result has been to establish the life of the replacement cap at approximately 10,000 hours+ , change the caps and run another 10,000 hours. In the last 7 years since it’s inception we have proven this to be the case. This is why CARON can provide a limited 10,000 hour wear warranty on our replaceable caps and a 20,000 hour pro‐rated warranty on our wheel structures and Pin‐on base adapters.
To enable the customer to provide their own technicians, CARON COMPACTOR CO. announces a new cap puller group for both our traction and contour Pin‐On caps for use with our MEGAMAX and previous designs.
Please read this information regarding our procedure profile, review the photo of our removal kit and take a few minutes to view our DVD of actual field removal and installation. Please feel free to call us with any questions at 1‐800‐54‐CARON.
Now the caps can be removed quickly and safely, requiring 5 to 10 minutes to remove the cap, clean and inspect the base adapter, install new coil retainers and install the new caps with retainer pins.
We have developed a cap removal and replacement package. Please reference the enclosed photo identifying the following:
1. One puller designed for the Contour cap (1A) and one for the Traction cap (1B), both with pin deflector safety shields and preset dowel pins for tip removal.
2. An air hammer for pin removal.
3. A needle scaler for ease of cleaning the base adapter.
4. A 1⁄2” drive air gun and socket for use with cap puller bolts.
5. A wire brush for adapter hole cleaning.
6. Base Adaptor spring hole check tool.
7. Safety Collar for use with air hammer to install pins.
8. Air Hammer spare punches / alignment tool.
9. Socket for air wrench 1 5/16 x 1/2 drive.
10A. Dowel pin with collar for Contour Puller.
10B. Dowel pin with collar for Traction Puller.
11A. Pin removal safety shield for Contour Puller.
11B. Pin removal safety shield for Traction Puller.
Safety equipment should be worn at all times including face shield and ear protection when removing and installing retainer pins and performing these procedures.
To demonstrate the puller:
1. Place the puller (1A, 1B) over the worn tooth and hand loosen or tighten the four puller screws aligning the holes in the puller with the holes in the cap. Be sure to incorporate the pin removal safety shield (11A, 11B).
2. Use the air hammer with punch (2) to remove the pins. After the removal of the pins place the four pre‐set dowel pins(10A,10B) with stops in the puller holes that protrude into the cap. Once all four dowel pins are secure you are ready to remove the cap.
3. Using the 1⁄2” air gun (4) with 1 5/16” socket (9), slowly work the four puller screwss in a clockwise or counterclockwise pattern. You must continue to rotate the air gun on the four puller screws. Do not attempt to remove the cap using the impact gun on only one or two puller screws. Slowly using all four puller screws will produce an even pull on the cap to remove. Once the cap separates from the adapter continue to use a rotational pattern until the cap is above the mortise and tenon lock area.
4. The needle scaler (3) is provided to reduce the thorough cleaning time of the adapter prior to new cap installation.
5. Using a round wire brush (5) included in the CARON removal kit, clean the holes in the adapter.
6. The kit includes a Base Adaptor spring hole check tool (6) Using this tool with the three different steps will determine whether an oversized spring is necessary.
7. Install the proper coil retainer in the adapter holes and install the new cap. Occasionally it is necessary to use a five pound hammer to seat the cap on the base.
9. Once proper alignment is attained place the retainer pin in the cap and use the air hammer (2) with safety collar (7) to install the pins. Never engage the punch without using the safety collar to prevent injury to your hand. WD 40 is an excellent lubricant to spray on the pin prior to installation.
